Reading a quote in context
The four questions the ledger asks before it records a sentence.
Who said it, to whom, when, and what did they want. A sentence lifted out of a keynote is doing different work from the same sentence in an earnings call, and the venue field exists to keep that difference visible.
The ledger does not attempt to reconstruct intent. It records the setting, which is usually enough for a reader to judge the rest.
- Who: a named person, not an organisation.
- To whom: the audience in the room.
- When: the day it was said, not the day it was reported.
- What they wanted: recorded as the venue, not as a motive.
