How to cite the ledger
What to include so a reader can check you, not just quote you.
The ledger is designed to be quoted and checked. A citation that includes the snapshot date, the record id and the person's name is enough for anyone to find the same row and the same sources.
Quoting the ledger without the snapshot date is the most common error, and the one that makes a number unfalsifiable within a year.
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Record id | Unique and stable; finds the row |
| Snapshot date | Pins the numbers to a moment |
| Person and venue | Prevents a claim being read as the dataset's own |
| Verdict | Stops a quote being mistaken for an endorsement |
