What the sigils are
Initials on a colour, and the reasoning behind the fallback.
A sigil is two letters and a colour derived from the person's role. It is not a portrait, an avatar or an illustration of a face; it is a placeholder that says 'no licensed photograph is available'.
The alternative — generating a plausible face — would make the page look more finished and would make the archive less trustworthy. The sigil is the honest version of the same empty space.

- Sigils are typographic, never photographic.
- They are derived from the record, not designed per person.
- They never appear on the same surface as a claim about identity.
