Transcripts, reporting and the difference in authority
A verbatim transcript and a news report are not the same kind of document.
Where a transcript exists, the ledger prefers it, because a transcript records what was said rather than what a reporter concluded was newsworthy. Reporting is used for corroboration, for context, and for the cases where no transcript survives.
The source-kind tally below is therefore also a statement about how much of the collection can be quoted with confidence.
| Claims | |
|---|---|
| Backed by two or more sources | 54 |
| Backed by exactly one source | 9 |
| Editorial summaries with no quotation and no citation | 177 |
Order of preferenceOfficial transcript, then contemporaneous reporting, then a published interview or podcast, then a press release. Never a search snippet.
