Why the ledger shows a licence or a pair of initials, and never a synthetic portrait.

Snapshot 2026-10-25 240 claims 138 citations 209 people

A generated likeness of a real person is a small forgery that becomes a large one when it is presented next to their actual words. This site does not make them. Every photograph here is a real photograph, by a named photographer or institution, under a stated licence.

Where no suitably licensed photograph exists, the person keeps their initials on a sigil. That is a visible gap, and a visible gap is more honest than a convincing invention.
